Meet Tatiana Velásquez-Roa

This biology doctoral student was the first Texas State University student to recieve a named International Peace Scholarship from the Philanthropic Educational Organization Sisterhood. To commemorate this achievement, I was asked to write a story about Tatiana, her research, and the impact this award had on her. In conjunction with the story, I created a short reel to post across our social media platforms.

Tatiana had previously been interviewed for a seperate award she won, the Alpha Chi "In Scholarship and in Service" Grant. That reel had a lot of footage go unused, so I repurposed it into a reel all about Tatiana that went deeper on her research and her advice for other students. By utilizing shortform content, we were able to route users from social media to the Newsroom to read my story.

The story was a pleasure to write. It was the first time something I had written was featured in the Texas State University Newsroom. It had been several years since I had written from the perspective of a journalist, so it felt good to go back to my roots and stretch those muscles again. Publishing a story like this advertises our graduate programs and the university at large as an institution that fosters award winning researchers and pillars of their academic communities.
